I knit in the round, except when I get to the design. Then I knit back and forth so I don't have to carry the red all the way around the hat. Reverse side of the design:
And I finally figured out how to get around sewing it together after I'm done. You can kind of see in this picture, I do a cable with just a single stitch while knitting back and forth.
